Kikopey Women’s Craft Market was founded by Mary Akinyi Ireland, whose deep commitment to community upliftment continues to guide everything we do.
Her passing in 2025 is a profound loss to her community far and wide, and all those whose lives were brightened by her presence. Yet, her spirit lives on in this place ; in every craft made, every story shared, and every woman who finds new skills and confidence here.
We honour Mary by continuing the work she began — creating pathways for women to earn a stable income, support their families, and build livelihoods that lift their households above the poverty line.
Our focus:
• Eco-friendly, traditional crafts
• Fair, transparent income
• Skills training and mentorship
• Shared learning and cooperation that strengthens the community
Our mission is to provide women with practical craft skills and stable earning opportunities that improve daily life for their families.
ABOUT KIKO
OUR PARTNERS
From the start, collaboration has shaped our work. With generous support from Greater Lake Elementaita Conservation Area (GLECA) and partners, we created a vibrant space selling eco-conscious products and nurturing skills and economic growth for women.
OUR IMPACT
Empowering women through creativity, connection, and sustainable income.
Since 2023, Kikopey Women’s Craft Market has reached over 250 community members through skills training, enterprise development, and environmental initiatives.
Our impact includes:
20+ women artisans involved since 2023
90% of every sale paid directly to makers, ensuring fair and dignified livelihoods
8 community workshops in crochet, beadwork, weaving, and cooking
Local cultural events celebrating craft, heritage, and community connection
A welcoming craft shop and roadside café supporting both artisans and local families
In response to community priorities, we have also launched four sustainable livelihood initiatives :
A beekeeping facility
A tree nursery
Tour guide training
The women’s craft market
Together, these initiatives create practical income opportunities while contributing to environmental stewardship around Lake Elementaita.
